P. Padmarajan

Path breaking Malayalam film maker whose movies bridged the differences between commercial and art cinema. Padmarajan wrote and created some of the best movies Malayalam cinema has seen. Casting an array of brilliant actors, he made them dazzle on screen with their performances. Mohanlal was exquisite in Thuvanathumbikal, Jayaram was never better than in Moonampakkam. His scripts are tightly woven and smooth, and reminds one of Woody Allen.

Padmarajan was an optimist and his movies reflected the higher values of human existence. He shattered moral values but pointed towards higher possibilities within the human self. Romance was handled without melodrama; his tragedies were bereft of sentimentalism.
Padmarajan has left behind an array of work that is not easy to slot. Most of his movies were great, but some were quite ordinary and pedestrian. While the great movies showed us his brilliance, the others showed us that he was not afraid to experiment. Padmarajan was not a director who lived to be extolled, but one who made movies for the sheer joy of it.
